ANIMAL (2024) by Sofia EXARCHOU

On Tuesday, 23 September at 19:00 and on Wednesday, 24 September at 21:00 the fiction film ANIMAL (Greece, 2023, 116 min) directed by Sofia EXARCHOU will be screened in cinema Utopia, in the original Greek version with English subtitles.

SYNOPSIS

Under the hot Greek sun, the animateurs at an all-inclusive island resort prepare for the busy touristic season. Kalia is the leader of the pack. Paper decors, glossy costumes and dance shows fill the stage. As summer intensifies and the work pressure builds up, their nights become violent and Kalia’s struggle is revealed in the darkness. But when the spotlights turn on again, the show must go on.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Sofia Exarchou was born in Athens. She studied electrical engineering at the National Technical University of Athens, film direction at the Stavrakos Film School and theater at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York. She pursued post-graduate film studies at Esav in Toulouse, France. In 2014, she was selected for the Sundance Screenwriter’s & Director’s Lab. Park, her first feature film, premiered at Toronto IFF and San Sebastian IFF, where it won the New Directors Award. Since then, it has participated and won awards in numerous international film festivals (Rotterdam IFF, BFI, Thessaloniki IFF - Best Actress & Best Greek Film, European Film Festival Palic-Best European Film, Greek Film Academy - Best First Feature & Best Sound Award etc). Animal is Sofia’s sophomore feature film.

Κάτω από τον καυτό ήλιο της ελληνικής υπαίθρου, οι ανιματέρ που δουλεύουν σε ένα all-inclusive ξενοδοχείο προετοιμάζονται για την τουριστική σεζόν. Η Κάλια είναι η αρχηγός της ομάδας. Καθώς το καλοκαίρι κορυφώνεται και η πίεση αυξάνεται, οι νύχτες τους γίνονται βίαιες και ο αγώνας της Κάλιας αποκαλύπτεται στο σκοτάδι. Αλλά όταν ανάψουν ξανά τα φώτα, το σόου θα πρέπει να συνεχιστεί.

ΣΧΕΤΙΚΑ ΜΕ ΤΗ ΣΚΗΝΟΘΕΤΡΙΑ

Η Σοφία Εξάρχου είναι Ελληνίδα σκηνοθέτρια και σεναριογράφος. Το 2014 επιλέχθηκε για το Sundance Screenwriter’s Director's Lab. Το Park (2016), η πρώτη μεγάλου μήκους ταινία της, έλαβε εξαιρετικές κριτικές έπειτα από την πρεμιέρα της στο Toronto IFF και στο San Sebastian IFF, όπου κέρδισε το βραβείο New Directors Award. Η δεύτερη μεγάλου μήκους ταινία της, με τίτλο Animal, επιλέχθηκε για το L’Atelier του Φεστιβάλ Καννών του 2020 και τον Αύγουστο του 2023, έκανε πρεμιέρα στο Locarno IFF, όπου κέρδισε το βραβείο καλύτερης ερμηνείας. Τον Οκτώβριο του 2023 το Animal κέρδισε το βραβείο Καλύτερης Ταινίας στο Vancouver IFF.
