God loves caviar | Ο Θεός αγαπάει το χαβιάρι (2012) by Yannis Smaragdis

On Tuesday 25 January at 19:00 and on Wednesday 26 January at 21:00 the international production GOD LOVES CAVIAR (Greece / Russia, 2012, 101 min, colour) directed by Yannis Smaragdis will be screened in cinema Utopia, in the English and Greek original version with English subtitles. The film is suitable for children over 12. 

Mr Smaragdis has kindly allowed us to screen his film free of royalties. On Wednesday the film will be screened in room 4.

Synopsis


The compelling story of a humble Greek pirate, Ioannis Varvakis, who made a fortune selling caviar in Russia and all over the world. His wealth and power, however, do not give him contentment, and his boundless ambition only brings suffering, until he gives everything away, including himself, in the name of love. This epic tale, based on Varvakis' real life, moves from the Greek island of Psara to the court of Catherine the Great in Russia and the shores of the Caspian Sea, and then back to Greece, a country torn by civil war and the fight for independence, during the Revolution of 1821 against the Ottoman Empire.

A few words about the director


Yannis Smaragdis was born in Crete in 1946. He studied Film in Greece and France. His most significant features are Cavafy (1996) and El Greco (2007). They were both very successful and award-winning films that participated in many international festivals, the most significant being the Toronto International Film Festival.
