TRAILER

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Born in Athens in 1955, he studied mathematics at Athens University and film at the Stavrakou Film School. From 1976 until 1992 he has worked as an assistant director with many filmmakers, most notably with Pantelis Voulgaris. He has taught in the Film Department at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki since the department was founded in 2004. He was appointed Assistant Professor of Film Direction in November 2008.
In 2011, he wrote and directed a 13-episode documentary series, “I Met Happy Craftsmen,” which broadcasted on the Greek Television channel ET1. His films have distinguished themselves at festivals internationally.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

I wanted to talk about my experience of teaching ‘Direction’ for 19 years in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Film School. About the joy I felt when a lesson went well, our hopes of building one of the finest film schools in Europe, the enormous problems we encountered. About cinema. Specifically, about teaching cinema, and how film transforms the illusion into emotion. “It’s all a lie”, Nikos says during an exercise, “but our emotions, they’re real”. About three generations: those of Mr Andrikos, the students —the gap between the two is vast— and Nikos in the middle, trying to pass his passion on to the young filmmakers. Finally, I wanted to talk about a son who seeks his father’s approval after many, many years.

Unlike most films about the Holocaust, The City and the City does not record episodes from the Nazi concentration camps, but instead focuses on the geography of memory. In this film, memory is omnipresent in the geography of a modern city because it refers not to the past, but to the present and the future. That is why the form of the film is unexpected and unclassifiable, like the memory of its two filmmakers, who return to Thessaloniki, their birthplace, and offer to guide us into the abyss.
