SMUGGLING HENDRIX (2018) by MARIOS PIPERIDES

On Tuesday 10 December 2024 at 19:00 and on Wednesday 11 December 2024 at 21:00 the film SMUGGLING HENDRIX (Cyprus, Germany, Greece, 2018, 93 min, color) directed by Marios PIPERIDES will be screened in cinema Utopia, in the original version (Greek, English, Turkish language) with English subtitles. The film is not suitable for children under 12.

SYNOPSIS

Yiannis, a fading musician, is planning to leave crisis-ridden Cyprus for a better life abroad. His plans are put on hold when his dog Jimi runs away and crosses the UN buffer zone that divides the “Greek” from the “Turkish” side of the island. Since animal exchange between the two “sides” is prohibited, Yiannis reluctantly joins forces with Hasan, a Turkish settler, and a cast of unexpected characters to smuggle his best friend back. Through the simple story of a man who loses his dog, SMUGGLING HENDRIX gives a vivid demonstration of how the fences we build, both real and imagined, between ourselves and others, can be broken down once we recognize the familiarity in the face of the unknown.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Marios Piperides was born in 1975 in Nicosia, Cyprus. After studying Broadcast Management and Film Production in the US, he returned to Cyprus in 2002. As the audiovisual  sector is small in Cyprus, Piperides had the opportunity to gain experience in every aspect of filmmaking. In 2005 he founded his production company, amp Filmworks. As a writer/director he has made a documentary and two short films. The main theme in his work is the ongoing division of Cyprus and their need to overcome their own prejudices. Smuggling Hendrix is Piperides’ first feature.

ΣΥΝΟΨΗ

Το σχέδιο του Γιάννη για να φύγει από την Κύπρο ανατρέπεται όταν ο σκύλος του, ο Τζίμι, διασχίζει τη Νεκρή Ζώνη που χωρίζει τις ελεύθερες περιοχές από τα κατεχόμενα. Επειδή η μεταφορά ζώων από τα κατεχόμενα απαγορεύεται, ο Γιάννης αναγκάζεται να ζητήσει τη βοήθεια κάποιων «εκλεκτών» χαρακτήρων για να τον φέρει πίσω.

Ο Μάριος Πιπερίδης γεννήθηκε το 1975 στην Κύπρο. Σπούδασε Κινηματογράφο και Διοίκηση Μέσων Μαζικής Επικοινωνίας στην Αμερική. Το 2005 ίδρυσε τη δική του εταιρεία παραγωγής AMP Filmworks. Έχει σκηνοθετήσει ένα ντοκιμαντέρ και δύο ταινίες μικρού μήκους. Το Φυγαδεύοντας τον Χέντριξ είναι η πρώτη του μεγάλου μήκους ταινία ως σεναριογράφος/σκηνοθέτης.
