Sunrise in Kimmeria (2018) by Simon Farmakas

On Tuesday 7 December at 19:00 and on Wednesday 8 December at 21:00, the dramedy SUNRISE IN KIMMERIA (Cyprus, 2018, 100 min, colour) written and directed by Simon FARMAKAS will be screened in cinema Utopia, in the Greek original version with English subtitles. The film is suitable for children over 12.

* On Tuesday after the screening there will be a Q&A with the director. *

Synopsis

An isolated Cypriot village goes into tragicomic overload when a flying object crash-lands in a potato field inside the adjacent UN-controlled buffer zone. A young farmer unwisely digs it out setting off a chain of incredible events.

Narrated with a slight nostalgic note, the film is a hybrid folk tale that blends a tableau of village characters with the portrait of an individual struggling to stand up for himself and make a difference.
Filmed on location in Cyprus, Luxembourg and Germany.

Το αγόρι στη γέφυρα | Boy on the bridge (2016) by Petros Charalambous

On Tuesday 21 September at 19:00 and on Wednesday 22 September at 21:00 the film BOY ON THE BRIDGE (Cyprus, 2016, 85 min, colour) directed Petros Charalambous will be screened in cinema Utopia, in the Greek original version with English subtitles. The film is suitable for children over 12 years old.

Synopsis

The 85-minute-long drama is director Petros Charalambous’ first feature film and is based on the novel The Land of the Golden Apple by Eve Makis. Set in the 1980’s, the coming-of-age film has as its main character 12-year-old Socrates, who finds himself involved in a murder investigation. While he looks for clues to solve the murder, he discovers that some people close to him may be involved in the crime, making him question his own identity.

In a seemingly idyllic Cyprus village, Socrates leads a life of unalloyed pleasure with his cousin and best friend Marcos - setting off homemade fireworks, tormenting local pensioners, hurtling through the village on their bicycles and defying the hapless local authorities. However, a shadow is cast over Socrates' life when he discovers that Marcos and his family are being abused by their violent father, Hambo, a gambler and a loan shark. As Socrates resolves to get to the truth before the police, he uncovers evidence that links those he loves to the crime and makes him question his own identity. Under the gloss of his idyllic surroundings lurks a dark family secret ready to turn his carefree life upside down. We follow Socrates on a thrilling and perilous journey of self-discovery as he learns the meaning of love, family loyalty and courage.

On Tuesday 13 October at 19:00 and on Wednesday 14 October at 21:00 the film My name is Eftyhia (Greece, 2019, 123 min, colour) directed by Angelos Frantzis will be screened in cinema Utopia, in the Greek original version with English subtitles. The film is suitable for children over 16.

Inspired by the life of the most prolific Greek female poet and lyricist, Eftihia Papagiannopoulou; an extraordinary woman and artist who has created a massive volume of timeless and popular songs. She travelled from Smyrna to Greece. She lived every day of her life as if it were her last. She wrote incessantly on any surface she could find.

A teacher who became an actress and played in streets and in theatres, a poet who became the greatest Greek folk songwriter. She collaborated with all the famous music personalities of the country, bravely asserting herself to a cruel and typically male-dominated world.

The film draws inspiration from the passions and weaknesses of Eftihias’ exuberant personality, unconventional character, following her pioneer life and the indelible mark she inherited to Greek folk song writing.

Coming back in October - Έναρξη τον Οκτώβριο

Dear members and friends of the Greek Cinema Club of Luxembourg,

This year, as you know, we only had screenings for the first two months. The Coronavirus pandemic obliged us to cancel the screening of March, for which we had planned the film of the Cypriot director Saimon Farmakas “Sunrise in Kimmeria” in his presence, as well as the screenings of the following months up to the summer holidays. The Committee of our Club discussed the possibility of starting again our screenings in September and decided that it is preferable, due to the outbreak and the measures applied in cinemas, not to hurry and postpone our re-start for the month of October, depending on the situation at that time.

We would also like to inform our members that they should not worry about the membership fees they have paid for 2020. When we restart our screenings we will find an arrangement with the next year’s fees.

We wish you nice holidays with safety and health and we hope to meet again soon in the cinema.

The Committee of the Greek Cinema Club of Luxembourg.
