DIRECTOR´S STATEMENT

I am a woman, actress and director. I am an optimistic and cheerful person interested in having a humorous and optimistic view even in the most difficult circumstances and this is what I have always tried to achieve in my films. I would like to make a documentary film about Afghanistan which would be different from previous ones: with humor, cheerfulness but also having an educational value. This film will reflect not only life in Afghanistan, but also the general world situation. Karim Asir, will be the main character of the film and through him we will explore the story of laughter in Afghanistan and beyond. Οver the centuries and in various religions, laughter has often been criticized and considered a threat. We will follow Karim to his performances, where, using Charlie Chaplin’s model, he performs comic ‘gags’ and pantomime, but also educates his compatriots on important social issues. I have known Karim Asir since my earlier shootings in Afghanistan (2012) and in addition he was one of my students at the University of Kabul at the Theatre Arts Department. He is an outstanding man who has achieved a lot within a few years.

We will explore comedy and laughter in Afghanistan, in the Muslim world and also in different religions. We will talk with people about the meaning of laughter in our lives. Laughter has a way of instantly connecting people and is one of the most basic and fundamental ways in which we communicate as human beings.

SYNOPSIS

Vangelis, a remnant of the rave generation, scrapes by as a small-time weed dealer. He is a cool, low profile person who would rather have a steady job than continue a life in petty crime. However, his prior arrest record blocks his attempts to join a society that rarely forgives past mistakes. When his neighbours threaten to call the cops on him, his life changes overnight. He is forced to leave his apartment and take refuge at his sister's house where he comes under the protection of her boyfriend, Petros, a bouncer with strong ties to the local underworld. Petros offers Vangelis a way out, by involving him in various crime deals, which would offer him easy money and respect in the underworld. Only problem is Vangelis doesn't want to be part this world. The film is inspired by true events.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Fokion Bogris (birth name: Eleftherios Ktistakis) was born in Athens, in 1979. He became fascinated with cinema at pre-school age. Studied communications. As a self-taught filmmaker, he started making his first home-made video movies around 2002. His first independent feature titled “Catharsis”, a near-parody of the revenge film subgenre, was released in 2009. Right afterwards, he decided to restart from zero, so he made “Family Tree” a short film about domestic violence which won him the “Best Newcomer Director” award at the 35th International Short Film Festival of Drama. It was followed by “The Second Man”, a short about a filmmaker’s self-destructive love affair, starring the late director Nicholas Triantafyllidis in a semi-autobiographical part. He has also made documentaries for national Greek television as well as music videos. Likes to get involved in various parts of the filmmaking process, from camerawork to editing.

Memento | Ενθύμιον (2021) by Nikos ZIOGAS

On Tuesday 21 February at 19:00 and on Wednesday 22 January at 21:00 the feature documentary MEMENTO (Greece, 2021, 72 min) directed by Nikos Ziogas will be screened in cinema Utopia, in the original Greek version with English subtitles.

Synopsis

“Memento” is a lyrical documentary film, an elegy to Epirus that fades away, but also to Epirus that survives. A love song for those who stayed, for those who migrated, for its musicians and its unique nature.
“Memento” travels us to Giromeri, Thesprotia, during the Easter days. Through the cinematic lens, we can observe the everyday life of this little village and search for the roots of a very special custom.  Through the songs, the lyrics and the sounds, the few people of the village try to keep traditions and legends alive, and secure the continuation of life even when it ends. Α special – not just ethnographic – depiction  of a custom whose origins are lost in time, where the footage filmed in color of the past joins the black and white present, and where the sounds of the clarinet are echoing through the rocks, the mountains and the faces.
“Memento” is an attempt – contrary to the relentless digitization of our times – to keep the analog memory of the Greek countryside alive: a life memento.
