On Tuesday 20 September at 19:30 and on Wednesday 21 September at 21:00 the documentary A Family Affair (Greece, 2015, colour, 87 min) by Angeliki Aristomenopoulou on the Xylouris family will be screened in cinema Utopia in the original Greek version with English subtitles. Not suitable for children under 12 years.
Synopsis
The Xylouris Family is Greece’s most famous musical clan. Three generations of musicians uphold and pass on the vibrant tradition of Cretan music, performing ceaselessly to followers across the world. From 80-year-old Psarantonis, credited with reinventing Cretan music, to his son Psarogiorgis and teenage grandchildren, A Family Affair discovers the electrifying power of their music and the sacred ties that hold the family together.
A driving force behind the discovery of Cretan music for global audiences, Psarantonis’ musical lineage stretches back generations and into the future. His son George, a singer and lute player, joined his family band as a teen, travelling the world and keeping the tradition of Cretan music alive. While on tour in Australia, George met his wife, Shelagh, and over the years the couple has split their time between Crete and Melbourne. Their three children, Nikos, Adonis and Apollonia, all share their father’s musical talents and have embraced the riches that come from a cross-cultural upbringing.
Angeliki first met the family while making a documentary about Greek rock legend Yiannis Angelakas. Observing the Xylouris’ immense talents and unique family bonds, she embarked on filming the family as they prepare for a series of concerts where three generations of the clan would come together and perform as one.
A Family Affair charts the musical precision, dedication and passion that each member shares. As the family’s first performance at Womadelaide approaches, Angeliki’s camera captures the exhilaration and pressure of performing when your band members are beloved family. The film culminates in an electrifying performance filmed at Melbourne’s Forum Theatre.
This is a big-hearted examination of what binds us, from familial bonds to cultural gatherings that help us celebrate our differences and shared experiences as global citizens.

About the director
Angeliki Aristomenopoulou was born in Athens. She studied directing in London and Barcelona specializing in documentary filmmaking. She returned to Athens in 2001 where she worked as an assistant director and set photographer in several Greek film productions. From 2005 onwards she has been directing and supervising the documentary series “World Music”, one of the most popular series of its kind. She has completed over 30 episodes including themes and genres from all over the world, some of which have competed successfully in international film festivals. Her feature documentary film Wondering Soul won the Fipresci award of best documentary film In Thessaloniki Film Festival 2009.

Η ταινία θα προβληθεί στα ελληνικά με αγγλικούς υποτίτλους και είναι κατάλληλη για παιδιά από 12 ετών.

Με γυρίσματα στην Κρήτη, την Αυστραλία και το Βέλγιο, το Μία Οικογενειακή Υπόθεση ακολουθεί την σπουδαία μουσική παράδοση της οικογένειας Ξυλούρη. Η ταινία επικεντρώνεται στον Ψαρογιώργη, τον κατά κόσμο Γιώργο Ξυλούρη, που περιοδεύει στην Κρήτη και σε όλο τον κόσμο, τραγουδώντας και παίζοντας λαούτο. Είναι ο συνεχιστής μιας σπουδαίας μουσικής παράδοσης, η γέφυρα που ενώνει τον πατέρα του, τον διάσημο λυράρη Ψαραντώνη και τον θείο του, τον θρυλικό Νίκο Ξυλούρη, με τη νέα γενιά και ειδικότερα με τα τρία παιδιά του, Νίκο, Αντώνη και Απολλωνία, που σπουδάζουν στη Μελβούρνη της Αυστραλίας.
Σύμφωνα με την σκηνοθέτη της ταινίας, Αγγελική Αριστομενοπούλου, «είναι ένα ντοκιμαντέρ για τη δύναμη της οικογένειας και της μουσικής. Είναι η ιστορία μίας μοναδικής μουσικής παράδοσης και των ανθρώπων που την κουβαλούν».
Λίγα λόγια για τη σκηνοθέτη
Η Αγγελική Αριστομενοπούλου είναι σκηνοθέτης με πολυετή πείρα στα μουσικά ντοκιμαντέρ. Από το 2005 έως το 2010 εργάστηκε ως σκηνοθέτης στη σειρά ντοκιμαντέρ «Μουσικές του Κόσμου» της ΕΡΤ, μια από τις πιο δημοφιλείς σειρές του είδους της. Έχει ολοκληρώσει πάνω από 30 μουσικά ντοκιμαντέρ με θέματα από όλο τον κόσμο και με προβολή σε διεθνή φεστιβάλ και τηλεοπτικά κανάλια όπως το CBC/Canada, το Al-Jazeera/UK, το Czech & Slovenian TV. Η τελευταία της ταινία μεγάλου μήκους, «Ταξιδιάρα Ψυχή» απέσπασε το βραβείο διεθνών κριτικών FIPRESCI στο Φεστιβάλ Ντοκιμαντέρ Θεσσαλονίκης 2010.

La réalisatrice
Angeliki Aristomenopoulou, cinéaste et photographe vit à Athènes. De 2005 à 2010, elle est réalisatrice et chercheure pour la série documentaire Musiciens du Monde, l’une des émissions les plus populaires de la télévision grecque (ERT) sur les musiques du monde. Elle a réalisé plus de 30 documentaires sur des thèmes variés, certains diffusés par les chaînes du monde entier. En 2010, son long-métrage Wandering Soul a remporté le prix Fipresci au Festival du Film de Thessalonique.
