Athens, 2004 summer Olympic Games. 11-year-old Misha arrives from Russia to live with his mother, Sofia. What he doesn’t know is that there is a father waiting for him there. While Greece is living the Olympic dream, Misha will get violently catapulted into the adult world, riding on the dark side of his favourite fairy tales.
“Son of Sofia” is a violent, absurd, urban fairy tale about the inability to express and accept love. It's a story about the clandestine violence of family love and at the same time a story about how we raise our children and how our homeland grooms future citizens. Two men vie for one woman’s attention, just like two different worlds stake their claim to the same society.
In that sense, it is essentially about identity formation: national, religious, sexual, linguistic and political. The historical background is the summer of 2004, when Athens was hosting the Olympic Games. It’s the moment when the country’s socioeconomic rise had reached its peak and - in hindsight - the moment that marked the beginning of the end of Greece's national innocence, an experience similar to the coming of age of son of Sofia. At the end of the film, nothing will ever be the same - neither for Greece nor for the young protagonist.

A few words about the director
Born in Greece in 1977, Elina Psykou studied filmmaking and sociology in Athens. She continued her studies in cultural history in Paris and participated in the 2007 Berlinale Talent Campus.
Her first feature, “The Eternal Return of Antonis Paraskevas”, won the Works in Progress Award at the Karlovy Vary IFF in 2012 and premiered at the Berlinale Forum in 2013. During that same year, trade publication Variety singled her out as one of the “10 European Directors to Watch”. Her second feature, “Son of Sofia”, was selected to participate in the 2013 Berlinale Residency program, as well as the 2014 Berlinale co-production market, won the Works in Progress Award at the Les Arcs EFF in 2015 and premiered in competition at the Tribeca FF. Currently Elina is researching her first documentary, “To Live and Die in Europe”, supported by Creative Europe and EAVE and is writing her third feature.

Η Ελληνική Κινηματογραφική Λέσχη Λουξεμβούργου θα προβάλει την Τρίτη 18 Σεπτεμβρίου στις 19:00 και την Τετάρτη 19 Σεπτεμβρίου στις 21:00 στον κινηματογράφο UTOPIA την βραβευμένη ταινία Ο Γιος της Σοφίας (Ελλάδα/Γαλλία/Βουλγαρία, 2017, 110 λεπτά, έγχρωμη, ελληνικά και ρωσικά, με αγγλικούς υποτίτλους) της Ελίνας Ψύκου. Η ταινία δεν είναι κατάλληλη για παιδιά κάτω των 16 ετών.
Λίγα λόγια για την ταινία
Η ταινία αφηγείται την ιστορία του 11χρονου Μίσα, ο οποίος φτάνει από τη Ρωσία στην Ελλάδα το καλοκαίρι του 2004 για να ζήσει με τη μητέρα του, Σοφία, έπειτα από ένα μεγάλο διάστημα αποχωρισμού. Αυτό που δεν ξέρει είναι ότι στην Αθήνα τον περιμένει ένας νέος πατέρας. Όσο η Ελλάδα ζει το Ολυμπιακό της όνειρο, ο Μίσα θα απογειωθεί βίαια προς τον ενήλικο κόσμο με όχημα τη σκοτεινή πλευρά των αγαπημένων του παραμυθιών.
Ο Βίκτορ Κόμουτ, ο βασικός πρωταγωνιστής της ταινίας, που υποδύεται τον Μίσα, είναι ένα παιδί από την Ουκρανία που ζει από τα οκτώ του χρόνια στην Ελλάδα. Η Βάλερι Τσεπλάνοβα που υποδύεται τη Σοφία, τη μητέρα του Μίσα, είναι διακεκριμένη ηθοποιός στη Γερμανία, μετανάστευσε εκεί με την οικογένειά της από τη Ρωσία, επίσης στα οκτώ της, κι εκεί έχει κάνει από θέατρο με τον Ντίμιτερ Γκότσεφ μέχρι σινεμά με τον Αντρέας Ντρέζεν. Τον κύριο Νίκο -τον πατέρα που θα ανακαλύψει ερχόμενος στην Ελλάδα ο μικρός Μίσα- ενσαρκώνει ο Θανάσης Παπαγεωργίου, σ' έναν από τους σπάνιους κινηματογραφικούς του ρόλους.
Ο Γιος της Σοφίας πήρε το βραβείο Καλύτερης Ταινίας του Διεθνούς Διαγωνιστικού Τμήματος στο φεστιβάλ της Tribeca της Νέας Υόρκης και βραβείο σεναρίου, σκηνοθεσίας και β' ανδρικού ρόλου στο φεστιβάλ της ελληνικής ακαδημίας κινηματογράφου.

Λίγα λόγια για τη σκηνοθέτιδα
Η Ελίνα Ψύκου γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1977. Σπούδασε σκηνοθεσία κινηματογράφου στη Σχολή Λυκούργου Σταυράκου και Κοινωνιολογία στο Πάντειο Πανεπιστήμιο. Η πρώτη της μεγάλου μήκους ταινία, «Η αιώνια επιστροφή του Αντώνη Παρασκευά», απέσπασε το πρώτο βραβείο στο τμήμα Works in Progress του Karlovy Vary IFF 2012 και έκανε την παγκόσμια πρεμιέρα της στο Φεστιβάλ Βερολίνου 2013 (τμήμα Forum).
