WISHBONE (2024) by Penny PANAGIOTOPOULOU



On Tuesday, 9 December at 19:00 and on Wednesday, 10 December at 21:00 the film WISHBONE (Greece, 2024, 123 min, colour) co-written and directed by Penny Panayotopoulou will be screened in cinema Utopia, in the original Greek version with English subtitles. Not suitable for children under 18. 

SYNOPSIS
Costas has recently become a security guard in a public hospital. When his older brother suddenly dies, he not only has to take care of his
little niece Niki, but also has to find the money to cover the debts left by his brother. The family home is in danger of being seized. He gets caught up in a juicy scheme: making up medical malpractice cases out of nothing. When a doctor from his hospital, unjustly accused, appears at his home to ask him for help, he implodes under the pressure.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Penny Panayotopoulou is a writer, director, producer, born in Athens. She studied political sciences in the Athens University and cinema in the Polytechnic of Central London.

Her debut feature film Hard Goodbyes: My Father (2002) premiered in the 55th Locarno Film Festival, where it was awarded the Leopard for Best Actor, and the ecumenical jury prize.

In the Thessaloniki International Film Festival the film won the FIPRESCI Prize (for its acute symbiosis of daily routine and metaphorical sense of life),  the award for  Best Actor,  and the Greek Critics Union Award. From The Greek  ministry of culture (Greek Academy Awards ) it received the  Best New Director prize.  Among numerous international festivals, the film participated the Toronto International film Festival  in the Discovery Section, and set out for an acclaimed international career followed by many awards at many festivals worldwide.

Her film September (2013) premiered in the official competition of the 48th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival to critical acclaim, was nominated six times for the Hellenic Film Academy Awards where it  won  best leading  actress award and among others festivals , it has participated  in the Toronto, Goteborg , Rotterdam, Hong Kong IFF.

She has directed and produced a number of creative documentaries of an intense social and psychological background.

For  several years (2004 to 2008) she has taught  cinematography in the  Film Studies Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.  She is a Nipkow alumni (2010) and  a member of the European film Academy

Wishbone (2024) is her third film.
