Synopsis
The film is a story about an ordinary rural community, where things start to happen in an extraordinary way. After centuries of introversion, the tomato stirs up life in the village and its thirty three elderly inhabitants respond to a new reality. On top of this, Alexandros plays Wagner in the tomato fields to help them grow, uses stories to market the products and convinces people from all over the world to visit Elias. With humour and poetry, When Tomatoes Met Wagner speaks to us about the power of human relationships and the importance of reinventing oneself during difficult times.
Elias, a small farming village in central Greece, is dying out. But two cousins team up with the village grannies to cultivate the tomato seeds they have kept for hundreds of years. With a little help from Wagner’s music –which they use to help their tomatoes grow– the team succeeds to export little jars with organic tomato recipes across the world. The film follows the protagonists of this unlikely quest, as they struggle to survive and make their dream come true. Humorous and bittersweet, this is a story about the importance of reinventing oneself in times of crisis and the power of human relationships.

A few words about the director
Marianna Economou studied anthropology, photojournalism and film production in London. Since 2000, she directs and produces documentary series and independent films of Greek production and co-productions with European broadcasters such as the BBC, ARTE and YLE. She has received awards for The School, My Place in the Dance, Please Listen to Me, Bells, Threads And Miracles, Twelve Neighbours, Food for Love and The Longest Run which was nominated for the European Film Awards 2016. The Longest Run also won the VER.DI award at Dok Leipzig.

Η Ελληνική Κινηματογραφική Λέσχη Λουξεμβούργου θα προβάλει την Τρίτη 19 Νοεμβρίου στις 19:00 και την Τετάρτη 20 Νοεμβρίου στις 21:00 στον κινηματογράφο UTOPIA το πολυβραβευμένο ντοκιμαντέρ της Μαριάννας Οικονόμου: Όταν ο Βάγκνερ συνάντησε τις ντομάτες (Ελλάδα, 2019, 72 λεπτά, έγχρωμο, ελληνικά με αγγλικούς υποτίτλους, κατάλληλη για παιδιά από 12 ετών). Η ταινία θα εκπροσωπήσει την Ελλάδα στη διεκδίκηση των βραβείων Όσκαρ το 2020.
Λίγα λόγια για την ταινία
Με χιούμορ και πρωτοτυπία, δύο ξαδέλφια και πέντε γυναίκες ενός Θεσσαλικού χωριού αναμετριούνται με την παγκόσμια αγορά, με όπλο μια ντομάτα.
Σε ένα χωριό του Θεσσαλικού κάμπου που αργοπεθαίνει, δύο ξαδέλφια και πέντε γυναίκες, αποφασίζουν να κάνουν μια νέα αρχή. Με λίγη βοήθεια από τη μουσική του Βάγκνερ που παίζουν στα χωράφια και τις ιστορίες που διηγούνται για να πάρουν κουράγιο, επιχειρούν να διεισδύσουν στην παγκόσμια αγορά με τη βιολογική καλλιέργεια ενός παλιού σπόρου ντομάτας. Με χιουμοριστική και ποιητική διάθεση, η ταινία μιλάει για την δύναμη των ανθρώπινων σχέσεων, την σημασία να βλέπει κανείς την ζωή με διαφορετική ματιά και να επαναπροσδιορίζεται σε δύσκολους καιρούς.
Ένα πρωτότυπο, επίκαιρο και γεμάτο χιούμορ ελληνικό ντοκιμαντέρ που έκανε πρεμιέρα στο επίσημο πρόγραμμα του Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου του Βερολίνου στο πλαίσιο του Culinary Cinema της Berlinale, το τμήμα του φεστιβάλ που προβάλλει ταινίες-‘τροφή για σκέψη’, γύρω από τις απολαύσεις αλλά και τις σκοτεινές πλευρές της διατροφής.

Λίγα λόγια για τη σκηνοθέτρια
Η Μαριάννα Οικονόμου σπούδασε ανθρωπολογία, φωτοδημοσιογραφία και παραγωγή βίντεο στο Λονδίνο. Εργάστηκε αρχικά ως φωτογράφος και ερευνήτρια σε ελληνικά και ξένα έντυπα, κανάλια και οργανισμούς. Από το 2000 ασχολείται με το ντοκιμαντέρ όπου εκτελεί παραγωγές για την ΕΡΤ (Μαθήματα–Παθήματα, Οικολογικά Ημερολόγια) και σκηνοθετεί ντοκιμαντέρ σε συμπαραγωγή με ξένα κανάλια (BBC, ARTE, YLE) που συμμετέχουν σε διεθνή φεστιβάλ («Το Σχολείο», «Για μια θέση στο χορό», «Οδός Σφακτηρίας», «Bells, Threads and Miracles», «Άκουσέ με», «Food for Love»). Η τελευταία της ταινία, «Ο πιο μακρύς δρόμος» βραβεύτηκε στο Φεστιβάλ Ντοκιμαντέρ της Λειψίας, και ήταν υποψήφιο για το βραβείο καλύτερου ντοκιμαντέρ της Ευρωπαϊκής Ακαδημίας Κινηματογράφου.
