The Miracle of the Sargasso Sea | Το Θαύμα της Θάλασσας των Σαργασσών (2019) by Syllas Tzoumerkas

On Tuesday 17 May at 19:00 and on Wednesday 18 May at 21:00 the film The Miracle of the Sargasso Sea (Greece, 2019, 121 min, colour) directed by Syllas Tzoumerkas will be screened in cinema Utopia, in the Greek original version with English subtitles. The film is not suitable for children.

Synopsis

Two women live solitary lives while dreaming of getting away. Elisabeth is a once-ambitious police officer forced to relocate from Athens ten years earlier and now living a joyless, hung-over life. Rita is the quiet, mysterious sister of a lounge singer in the local disco. When a sudden death upsets the town and turns the local community upside-down, the two women who had been ignoring each other’s existence begin drifting towards each other. As the secrets hidden in the swamps begin to surface, they will have a chance to become each other’s saviours.

A few words about the director

Syllas Tzoumerkas was born in 1978 in Thessaloniki. His first feature film Homeland premiered at the Venice Critics' Week 2010. His second feature A Blast premiered in competition at Locarno 2014, and his third, The Miracle of the Sargasso Sea at the Berlinale Panorama 2019. Acclaimed by the world press and audiences for their distinctive style, bold characterization and strong performances, Tzoumerkas' films have participated in many festivals around the world and have been distributed to theatres and streaming platforms in many countries. He participated as an actor in feature films, shorts and stage performances. He co-curated with fellow director Elina Psykou, Motherland, I See You - the 20th Century of Greek Cinema, the restoration program and moving festival of the Hellenic Film Academy.

Λίγα λόγια για την ταινία

Δύο γυναίκες, μια αστυνομικός και μια εργάτρια σε εργοστάσιο παραγωγής χελιών, ζουν σε μια επαρχιακή πόλη στη Δυτική Ελλάδα. Όταν μια μυστηριώδης αυτοκτονία θα φέρει τα πάνω-κάτω στη μικρή πόλη και θα πυροδοτήσει έναν άγριο κύκλο βίας, οι ζωές των δύο γυναικών που μέχρι χθες αγνοούσαν η μία την ύπαρξη της άλλης, αρχίζουν να συγκλίνουν. Δεν το ξέρουν ακόμη, αλλά από τη συνάντησή τους μπορεί να κρέμεται η σωτηρία τους.

Ο Σύλλας Τζουμέρκας περιγράφει την ταινία ως ένα έντονο και προκλητικό δράμα-θρίλερ για τη χαμένη αξιοπρέπεια, τη λύτρωση και τα μυστικά που κρύβονται στους βάλτους. Η ταινία δημιουργεί έναν ονειρικό χώρο, που μοιράζονται οι δυο γυναίκες. Η οπτική τους, τα όνειρά τους η υπαρξιακή τους κρίση, όλα ενώνονται και οι δυο τους μοιράζονται μία επείγουσα επιθυμία να αλλάξουν τη ζωή τους.

Λίγα λόγια για το σκηνοθέτη

Ο Σύλλας Τζουμέρκας γεννήθηκε το 1978 στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Γράφει, σκηνοθετεί και παίζει στο σινεμά και το θέατρο. Η πρώτη του ταινία, «Χώρα Προέλευσης», έκανε την παγκόσμια πρεμιέρα της στο Φεστιβάλ Βενετίας. Η δεύτερη ταινία του, «H Έκρηξη», έκανε την παγκόσμια πρεμιέρα της στο Φεστιβάλ Λοκάρνο, προβλήθηκε σε πάνω από 80 φεστιβάλ σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο και κυκλοφόρησε σε 20 χώρες.
