Fish n' Chips (2011)

On Tuesday 12 November at 19:00 and on Wednesday 13 November at 21:30 we will screen in cinema Utopia the film Fish n' Chips (Greece, 2011, colour, 102 min) by Elias Demetriou. The film is in the original version with Εnglish subtitles. 

Synopsis

A contemporary drama, Fish n' Chips opens with Greek-cypriot Andy living in London and working in a traditional fish and chips shop, as the title divulges. The deterioration of his mum's health induces his return to Cyprus, where he decides to continue the job he's an expert at, but things don't work out quite as he has planned. While living temporarily with his married brother, and having to face painful incidents his mum's Alzheimer brings upon, Andy has to clearly face the vital question "where do I belong, in the end?" and redefine his identity issues. 

The film which won Best Directing Prize at the London Greek Film Festival is featuring a multicultural cast. It stars Marios Ioannou, Marlene Kaminsky, Anne Marie O' Sullivan, Diomedes Koufteros etc.

What did the press say

Hollywood Reporter highlights the "subtly endearing performance" by Marios Ioannou, while Stratos Kersanidis states that Elias Demetriou "makes a film from the heart".

Η Ελληνική Κινηματογραφική Λέσχη Λουξεμβούργου θα προβάλει την Τρίτη 12 Νοεμβρίου στις 19:00 και την Τετάρτη 13 Νοεμβρίου στις 21:30 στον κινηματογράφο Utopia την ταινία Fish n' Chips (Ελλάδα, 2011, έγχρωμη, 102΄) του Ηλία Δημητρίου. Η ταινία θα προβληθεί με αγγλικούς υποτίτλους. 

Λίγα λόγια για την ταινία

Ένα σύγχρονο δράμα, το Fish n' Chips ανοίγει με τον ελληνοκύπριο Άντι εγκατεστημένο στο Λονδίνο να δουλεύει σε εστιατόριο που σερβίρει το παραδοσιακό ντόπιο fast food:  μπακαλιάρο με τηγανητές πατάτες. Η υγεία της μητέρας του τον αναγκάζει να γυρίσει στην Κύπρο, όπου προσπαθεί να συνεχίσει τη δουλειά που τόσο καλά ξέρει. Η προσωρινή συγκατοίκηση με τον αδερφό του, τα προβλήματα που δημιουργούνται λόγω του Αλτχάιμερ της μητέρας του, ο επαναπροσδιορισμός της ταυτότητάς του τον αναγκάζουν να αναζητήσει μια πιο ουσιαστική απάντηση στην ερώτηση: "που ανήκω τελικά;".

Η ταινία, η οποία κέρδισε το Βραβείο Καλύτερης Σκηνοθεσίας στο London Greek Film Festival πλαισιώνεται από πολυπολιτισμικό καστ. Παίζουν οι Μάριος Ιωάννου, Marlene Kaminsky, Anne Marie O' Sullivan, Διομήδης Κουφτερός κ.α.

"Ο Ηλίας Δημητρίου δημιουργεί μια ταινία ψυχής. Μια ταινία που κρύβει βαθιά μέσα της το δράμα της Κύπρου και των ανθρώπων της, χωρίς ίχνος εθνικισμού, αλλά με μία θαυμαστή διακριτικότητα.", γράφει ο Στράτος Κερσανίδης, ενώ το Hollywood Reporter επισημαίνει την "διακριτικά αξιαγάπητη απόδοση" του Μάριου Ιωάννου στον πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο, που "προσπαθεί με μια δόση αυταπάτης να βρει τις ρίζες του".

Le Ciné-club hellénique vous invite à ses séances du mardi 12 novembre à 19h00 et du mercredi 13 novembre à 21h30 au cinéma Utopia avec le drame Fish n' Chips de Elias Demetriou (titre original Fish n' Chips, Grèce, 2011, couleur, 103 min). Le film est en version originale grecque avec sous-titres en anglais. 

Il s'agit d'un chypriote grecque, Andy, qui est installé à Londres et travaille pour un resto rapide fish n' chips. Quand la santé de sa mère l'oblige de retourner à Chypre, il doit faire face aux situations  familiales délicates, problèmes d'identité, ce qu'il le mène à découvrir la réponse aux question "qui suis-je, à la fin?".

Le film a gagné le prix Meilleure Mise-en-Scène au Festival grec à Londres et il est doté d' un cast multiculturel.
