Jace (2011)

On Tuesday 25 February at 19:00 and on Wednesday 26 Febaruary at 21:00 we will screen in cinema Utopia the film Jace (Greece, colour, 2011, 142 min) written and directed by by Menelaos Karamaghiolis. The film is in the original Greek version with English subtitles. Not suitable for children under 16 years.

Synopsis

Jace is of Greek origin, born in Albania, the illegitimate son of a woman who is brutally murdered by her own family when, a little after giving birth to him, she refuses to reveal his father’s identity. The orphan boy grows up amidst more violence. He is barely seven when witnesses a massacre. His foster family in Gjirokaster falls prey to the Albanian mob. The villains spare the boy, but they turn him into a murderer, by forcing him to shoot – on the spot – his foster father. Now in the hands of obscure gangsters who "expert" homeless children for various reasons (reasons ranging from beggary to organ trade), J.A.C.E. is immediately "exported" and ends up in Athens, Greece, begging at street corners, exploring the secret horrors of brutal institutions for young offenders or serving obscure patrons, in a world where violent loss seems to be his only destiny. The movie follows Jace's inverted Odyssey through time in a dark universe of abuse, murder and fear, as he desperately (and silently) seeks for a "family" and a sense of belonging.

Director's note: Little orphan elephants and little orphan boys may have much in common. As they find themselves, all of a sudden, lonely and scared and confused, in a world where the law of the jungle prevails, they can turn, almost overnight, into criminals or victims. I saw in the fate of both animal and human children a common pattern that was intriguing, if not deeply moving, and that is what made me want to tell their story. My hero, Jace, "just another" anonymous orphan, will have to wander through the circuses and the jungles of Athens, until he finds some sort of identity and sanctuary of his own.

Menelaos Κaramaghiolis was born in Greece. He studied Classics at the University of Athens. He is a director, scriptwriter and producer for cinema and television. He is the founder of the production company Pausilypon Films. He directed documentaries and fiction feature films awarded in several international festivals.

Η Ελληνική Κινηματογραφική Λέσχη Λουξεμβούργου θα προβάλει την Τρίτη 25 Φεβρουαρίου στις 19:00 και την Τετάρτη 26 Φεβρουαρίου στις 21:00 στον κινηματογράφο Utopia την ταινία J.A.C.E (Ελλάδα, 2011, 142', έγχρωμη) του Μενέλαου Καραμαγγιώλη. Η ταινία θα προβληθεί με αγγλικούς υποτίτλους και είναι κατάλληλη για παιδιά από 16 ετών.

Λίγα λόγια για την ταινία

Ένας επτάχρονος Αλβανός, ο οποίος βλέπει να σκοτώνουν τη θετή οικογένειά του μπροστά στα μάτια του, πέφτει στα χέρια της μαφίας και καταλήγει στην Αθήνα. Έχοντας πάρει όρκο σιωπής, προσπαθεί να επιβιώσει σε έναν κόσμο βίας και διαφθοράς.

Το J.A.C.E. αφηγείται ένα σύγχρονο παραμύθι, με τίτλο το όνομα του ήρωά της, ενός σημερινού Ολιβερ Τουίστ. Τον φωνάζουν Jace, είναι ορφανός και η ζωή του είναι μια ανεστραμμένη, «νουάρ» Οδύσσεια. Κυνηγημένος από τα επτά του χρόνια και χωρίς ταυτότητα, θα βρει στο πρόσωπο της Μαρίας τον αληθινό έρωτα και το όνειρο μιας οικογένειας, καθώς βρίσκεται αναγκασμένος να την προστατέψει, κι αυτήν και το παιδί της, από τις ίδιες συμμορίες που τον καταδιώκουν από μικρό.

Το J.A.C.E. ξεκίνησε τη φεστιβαλική του πορεία από το Τόκιο και συνέχισε αποσπώντας το βραβείο καλύτερης γυναικείας ερμηνείας, για τη Στεφανία Γουλιώτη στο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου της Θεσσαλονίκης. Κατόπιν κέρδισε την εμπιστοσύνη των διανομέων στο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου του Βερολίνου. Στο Βουκουρέστι κέρδισε το Βραβείο Κριτικής Επιτροπής Romanian International Film Festival.

Ο Μενέλαος Καραμαγγιώλης γεννήθηκε στη Θήβα και είναι ραδιοφωνικός παραγωγός, σκηνοθέτης, σεναριογράφος αλλά και παραγωγός κυρίως σε ταινίες του κινηματογράφου. Σπούδασε Βυζαντινή και Νεοελληνική Φιλολογία στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών. Ταινίες του είναι οι: ROM (1989), Black out (1998) και J.A.C.E (2011).

Το Black Out το οποίο έχει σκηνοθετήσει αλλά και γράψει το σενάριο, απέσπασε τέσσερα βραβεία στο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Θεσσαλονίκης και συμμετείχε σε τρία διεθνή φεστιβάλ στο Σικάγο.

Ως ραδιοφωνικός παραγωγός, συνεργάζεται με το Τρίτο Πρόγραμμα όπου παρουσιάζει τις εκπομπές "Αυτόματος Τηλεφωνητής", "Δαιδάλου Πτήσεις" και "Που πάει η μουσική όταν δεν την ακούμε πια".

Résumé

Jace, un enfant d’origine gréco-albanaise que la vie condamne deux fois à l’orphelinat, assiste au massacre de sa famille adoptive, avant de tomber entre les mains de criminels qui « exportent » des enfants à l’étranger à différentes fins – de la mendicité au trafic d’organes. Jace se retrouve à Athènes, à mendier dans les rues, à découvrir les horreurs des maisons de correction ou à servir les dessins d’obscurs protecteurs, dans un univers où il ne semble avoir d’autre lot que la violence et la perte des êtres chers. Le film suit l’Odyssée négative de Jace dans un sombre univers d’abus, de meurtre et de peur, sa quête désespérée d’une « famille » et d’un sentiment d’appartenance.

Note d'intention du réalisateur

​Les éléphanteaux orphelins et les petits garçons orphelins ont probablement plus de choses en commun qu’on ne le pense. Lorsqu’ils se trouvent brusquement en proie à la solitude, la peur et la confusion, dans un monde où règne la loi de la jungle, ils peuvent devenir victimes ou bourreaux du jour au lendemain.

Il m’a semblé voir dans le destin de ces petits d’hommes et d’animaux un schéma commun qui m’a intrigué, sinon profondément ému, et c’est ce qui m’a donné envie de raconter leur histoire.

Mon héros, Jace, juste un orphelin anonyme de plus (« just another ») est condamné à errer dans l’arène ou la jungle d’Athènes, en quête d’une identité et d’un sanctuaire.
