On Tuesday 22 September at 19:00 and on Wednesday 23 September at 21:00 we will screen in cinema Utopia the film September (Greece, 2013, colour, 105 min) by Penny Panagiotopoulou. The film is in the original Greek version with French subtitles. It is not suitable for children under 16 years.
Synopsis
Anna is a 30-year-old woman who lives alone with her dog. Idiosyncratic and self-sufficient, she’s happy enough with her life until her dog dies and she loses direction. She suddenly finds herself looking around her, inside her and across the street to a neighbouring family who lives a completely different life to her own. She knocks on their door, hoping they will let her burry her dog in their garden, the only patch of land in their cement neighbourhood. The two women get to know each other and silently acknowledge the fact that they are alone. Each yearns for the other’s life, because no matter what choices you’ve made in your life, there’s always something you’ve left behind. And every September, the wound begins to itch and you start dreaming about a blank slate – only this time you might actually get one!

About the director
Penny Panagiotopoulou was born in Athens, studied law at the University of Athens and film directing at Stavrakos Film School. In 1985, she received her BA in Photography and Film from the Polytechnic of Central London (University of Westminster).
Her short films have won many awards and participated in international festivals. Her debut film, Hard Goodbyes: My Father, premiered at 55th Locarno Film Festival, won the Golden Leopard for Best Actor and set out for an acclaimed international career. The film received several prizes in festivals and found distribution in the United States among many other countries. In 2005, the original script was adapted into a novel by Media Factory Inc., Japan.
Since 1994 she has been working freelance producing and directing documentaries and films for National Greek Television. In 2004, she took up a teaching position at the Film Department of Aristotle University in Thessaloniki.
Her second feature film, “September”, received the NIPKOW Fellowship, won the Balkan Fund Prize in Thessaloniki International Film Festival and was selected by MEDIA Program for Development Single Project.

"Though too realistic and "normal" in execution to be part of the recent Greek Weird Wave of films such as Dogtooth and Attenberg, September does have things in common with other recent local titles such as Wasted Youth and Boy Eating the Bird's Food, which also chronicled how alienated, recognizable Greeks are driven to irrational acts in times of crisis." That's how The Hollywood Reporter situates Panagiotopoulou's film amidst the cinematographic crop of its time, while Screen Daily praises the director's ability for "a rare sensitivity as (she) dwells on the tender but distant relationship between the two women."

Η Ελληνική Κινηματογραφική Λέσχη Λουξεμβούργου θα προβάλει την Τρίτη 22 Σεπτεμβρίου στις 19:00 και την Τετάρτη 23 Σεπτεμβρίου στις 21:00 στον κινηματογράφο Utopia την ταινία Σεπτέμβριος (Γερμανία / Ελλάδα, 2013, διάρκεια 105 λεπτά, έγχρωμη) της Πέννυς Παναγιωτοπούλου. Η ταινία θα προβληθεί στα ελληνικά με γαλλικούς υποτίτλους και είναι κατάλληλη για παιδιά από 16 ετών.

Η Άννα (Κόρα Καρβούνη) είναι μια νέα γυναίκα που ζει μόνη της μαζί με τον σκύλο της Μανού. Δεν έχει δική της οικογένεια, πέρα από την αδελφή της που ζει στην Αμερική. Δουλεύει στο IKEA, κάνει βόλτες με τον Μανού και παρατηρεί από μακριά τις ζωές των άλλων. Είναι ευτυχισμένη μέσα στην αυτάρκεια της. Όταν ο Μανού πεθαίνει, η Άννα θα ζητήσει να τον θάψει στον κήπο της διπλανής οικογένειας, το μόνο απ’ τα σπίτια με κήπο της περιοχής και αγαπημένο μέρος παιχνιδιού του Μανού. Η γυναίκα της οικογένειας, Σοφία (Μαρία Σκουλά) ανοίγοντας τον κήπο της για τον Μανού, θα ανοίξει και μια πόρτα για την Άννα, να έρθει σε επαφή με αυτήν και την οικογένεια της. Μια ιδιότυπη σχέση αλληλοκατανόησης και σιωπηρής αναγνώρισης της μοναξιάς, θα αναπτυχθεί ανάμεσα στις δυο γυναίκες. Η Άννα είναι μόνη, και αναζητά μια θέση ανάμεσα στις ζωές των άλλων.

Λίγα λόγια για τη σκηνοθέτρια
Γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα. Σπούδασε νομικά στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών και σκηνοθεσία στη Σχολή Σταυράκου. Από το 1982 εως το 1985, έζησε στο Λονδίνο όπου σπούδασε φωτογραφία και σκηνοθεσία κινηματογράφου στο Polytechnic of Central London (University of Westminster). Από το 1986 εργάζεται ως συνεργάτης με την Ελληνική τηλεόραση, παράγοντας και σκηνοθετώντας σειρές κοινωνικού και ψυχαναλυτικού προβληματισμού και σειρές πολιτιστικού περιεχομένου.

Résumé
La jeune Anna vit seule dans un petit appartement d'Athènes avec son chien Manu, qu'elle aime plus que tout. Anna a un travail et se trouve plutôt satisfaite de sa vie. Mais le jour où Manu meurt, tout s'effondre. Inconsolable, Anna cherche du réconfort auprès de ses voisins. La famille de Sofia et Stathis devient pour elle le symbole du bonheur. Elle s'immisce peu à peu dans la vie du couple et devient omniprésente, jusqu'à susciter l'agacement, puis le rejet de ses nouveaux amis...
Anna, une trentenaire solitaire et indépendante, est plutôt satisfaite de sa vie, jusqu’à la mort soudaine de son chien adoré. Submergée par un sentiment de vide, elle se surprend à observer avec envie l’animation qui règne chez ses voisins d’en face, dont fait partie Sophia, mariée et mère de deux enfants. Sophia possède d’ailleurs la seule propriété des environs avec un jardin non pavé, ce qui pousse Anna à lui demander la permission d’y enterrer son chien. Cette demande rapprochera les deux parties car, malgré leurs différences, Anna se reconnaît dans l’attitude calme de sa voisine. Les deux femmes développent rapidement une sorte de solidarité silencieuse, chacune étant implicitement à l’écoute de l’isolement de l’autre.
