FILM SUMMARY

In the casino there is only one queen, the small ball that spins on the roulette table. None of the players pays the slightest attention to the female dealers. 

But Takis, a "perennial" med student doesn't go to the casino for the millions but for a day's wages. Vera works in a gym but trains and gets a second job as a dealer. Her aim is to protect her mother since regulations forbid relatives of employees from entering the casino.

Let her Dad knock himself out. There's no way he'll play roulette again! At some point Takis and Vera become lovers. They rig a game at the roulette table, leave the money with her Mom and hide out in a friend's house where their romantic dream soon succumbs to the wretched conditions in which they live. When her father dies of a heart attack in his Jeep, Vera suddenly finds herself with money. At the funeral, the manager of the casino threatens to send her to prison. A compromise is reached: Vera returns most of the money and fingers Takis who goes to jail. But something worse happens to her: she starts gambling to make enough money to open her own gym. The story spins out until they both realize that they truly love each other.

Katerina Gogou, Reinstating the Dark Side - Κατερίνα Γώγου, για την αποκατάσταση του Μαύρου

The director Antonis Boskoitis will be present both days to discuss with the audience. After Tuesday's screening a drink will be offered.

Film Summary

Katerina Gοgou lived her life like a flickering candle, wrote her radical poems and shared in other people's pain before she took a rock 'n roll dive into death at the beginning of the 90s. 

Gogou is remembered by people whose paths crossed her own, including actors, poets, political activists, directors, singers and songwriters. Her film portrait in black and white is complemented by previously unreleased audiovisual material and dramatised sequences, featuring actress Loukia Michalopoulou. Katerina Gοgou - Reinstating The Dark Side is the last part of a non-fiction trilogy, which started out in 2002 with a portrait of Fleury Dadonaki and continued in 2008 with the history of Greek rock. A series of marginal personalities who lived and died in the city of Athens provides the connective tissue among these three documentaries, shedding light on an idiosyncratic urban landscape that's forever gone.

The King - Ο Βασιλιάς

Film Summary

Nikos Grammatikos' drama The King is about a bad man trying to turn his life around. Vangelis gets out of prison, has a brief reunion with his girlfriend Maria, and declares to his former partners that he is done with crime. He sets out for a small village to live in his grandfather's house. Once he arrives, the town is suspicious of the stranger. Eventually police officer Petros befriends the man. As his fortunes start to improve, Maria and his old cronies arrive and bring about Vangelis' naturally self-destructive tendencies. The King was screened at the Thessaloniki Film Festival and won all the major prizes (Best Feature Film, Best Actor, Best Scenography and Sound).

Film Summary

Based on the best selling novel by Yannis Xanthoulis, “Christmas Tango” takes place in a cold and dreary army camp where a lonely lieutenant finds himself longing for the beautiful but unhappy wife of his colonel. Τέσσερις αποτυχημένοι νεκροθάφτες πάνε για την αρπαχτή που θα τους δώσει την ευκαιρία να αλλάξουν ζωή, φεύγοντας από το επάγγελμα που πήγανε προσωρινά βέβαια και έμειναν για πάντα. Πραγματοποιούν,με την υπόσχεση μεγάλης αμοιβής, την τελευταία επιθυμία αποθανόντα πλούσιου Έλληνα της αλλοδαπής. Επιθυμεί να τον πάνε από την Αθήνα στο χωριό του με τα πόδια. Όταν στην πορεία διαπιστώνουν ότι δεν υπάρχουν τα λεφτά της αμοιβής που τους έταξαν, απαγάγουν το πτώμα, το οποίο και τους μένει, αφού τελικά κανείς δεν ενδιαφέρεται για την υπόθεση. Όσο για τον νεκρό, έχει να κλείσει κάποιους ανοιχτούς ερωτικούς λογαριασμούς που θα μετατρέψουν το ταξίδι της επιστροφής σε ύμνο στη ζωή.

Unfair World - Άδικος Κόσμος

On Tuesday 25 September at 19:30 and on Wednesday 26 September at 21:30 in cinema Utopia we will screen the film Unfair World (Greece, 2011, colour, 107 min) by Filippos Tsitos, starring Antonis Kafetzopoulos.  The film is in the Greek original version with Εnglish subtitles.

Filippos Tsitos was awarded the Silver Shell for best director and Antonis Kafetzopoulos the Silver Shell for best actor for Unfair World at the International Film Festival of San Sebastian (Donostia) in 2011. In 2011 the cinema club screened Akadimia Platonos by the same director, also with Antonis Kafetzopoulos.

This film is a must-see, with some of the best Greek actors of their generation, being screened for the rentrée to begin one more year of Greek Cinema in Luxembourg. N.B. The actor and/or director may assist the screening. This is yet to be confirmed!

Film Summary

Sotiris is a detective working for the police in Athens. One day he decides to switch to vigilante justice: if someone goes to prison or is released from custody he now decides solely relying on his own perception of justice. When he kills a corrupt security man in order to prove the innocence of an inmate, the cleaning lady Dora is the only witness of this crime. In spite of his dependence from her and her lacking compassion he still sees her as his only accomplice. And while the honest Sotiris falls in love with the ruthless Dora, he does not realise that his boss increasingly suspects him to be the murderer.

Το Wasted Youth, το οποίο ο Παπαδημητρόπουλος συν-σκηνοθέτησε με τον γερμανό διευθυντή φωτογραφίας Γιαν Βόγκελ, εξιστορεί την παράλληλη πορεία δύο ανθρώπων στην Αθήνα κατά τη διάρκεια ενός 24ώρου. Περίληψη

Στη δεκαετία του 1970, σε κάποιο νοσοκομείο της Ελλάδας, μια οικογένεια θα αναγκαστεί να πάρει μια σκληρή απόφαση: να δώσει για υιοθεσία το νεογέννητο μωρό της μιας αδερφής, την οποία οι υπόλοιποι συγγενείς έκριναν ακατάλληλη για να μεγαλώσει και δεύτερο παιδί, στον ωριμότερο και πιο 'τακτοποιημένο' οικογενειακά αδερφό της. Μια εικοσαετία αργότερα, το μυστικό αποκαλύπτεται και οι δεσμοί της οικογένειας έρχονται σε ρήξη, ενώ η χώρα βρίσκεται σε έντονες κοινωνικές αναταραχές.
